When Marketing Manager Jon Wilcox realized that Hospice of Santa Cruz County had outgrown its aging website’s page builder, he turned to Team of Horses for a solution. As the leader overseeing marketing for the county’s longest-standing nonprofit hospice provider, Jon understands how essential a reliable, easy-to-manage digital presence is for supporting families through life’s most difficult transitions. In the interview below, he shares what wasn’t working, why he sought out a new approach, and how a collaborative partnership with Team of Horses led to a faster, simpler, and more sustainable website for the organization.
Tell us a little bit about your nonprofit.
We are the top nonprofit Hospice provider in Santa Cruz county. Established in 1978, we started as a fully volunteer organization and have developed into what we are today. We help families in the hardest transition we all face…end of life and we support all involved with medical care, grief support services and more.
What challenges or pain points were you experiencing with your previous website as your nonprofit evolved?
We had a system built on an old infrastructure that needed an overhaul. Our staff identified various pain points that we had been living with and that were causing a loss in productivity and increased amount of frustration.
Did you receive any feedback from frustrated website contributors? What goals or improvements were you hoping to achieve with the new site?
Internally we were fighting outdated systems that were wasting time. Nonprofits need to make every dollar stretch and often that is in staffing. Systems that work as simply as possible are vital.
Which new website features are most valuable to your organization?
TOH updated (replatformed) to a new page builder, Elementor for WordPress, that makes updating far easier. No more making the platform do things it wasn’t designed to do. On top of that, TOH asked us to think about challenges that we have been overcoming and worked with us to offer better solutions. Being able to just go to them and ask them what they think and knowing that they had our financial interests in mind was such a relief.
If you could describe the new website in a few words, what would you say?
Speedier, simpler, cost saving and a team effort. As a nonprofit we often bury the frustrations, thinking it is just part of the deal, but TOH simply asked if things were working for us and that started the ball rolling.
